Consider keeping a journal or bible blog3 John – This letter refers to real people; it mentions Gaius, Diotrephes, Demetrius. I think the main purpose of the letter is to encourage support and hospitality for people who are “traveling teachers”, and to warn against the control-freak Diotrephes, who is slandering John and refusing to support teachers of the truth.
Again, he is reluctant to write all of his concerns down on Papyrus/parchment.
There must have been a concern about his comments being read by the wrong people… these epistles were written at a time of high persecution.
